*WordPress has now made adding a browser and app icon much simpler, and automatically available; see my post on this new process here: “How to add an app icon and browser favicon”, published 11 February 2016.
I’ve recently discovered how to add a favicon to a WordPress site. Don’t know what that is? Essentially, it’s an icon associated with a URL that is variously displayed, as in a browser’s address bar or next to the site name in a bookmark list. You can see Be Blog Smart’s displayed on the tab for this site, up above. Want one too?
In order to create Be Blog Smart’s, I went to www.faviconer.com–a site that allows you to create one for free.
1) You can either upload an image or draw it right within the system–either way will translate the image as an .ico file.
2) Once you’re finished uploading or creating it, download and save the file. Then Faviconer will provide the html code (it should be similar to Be Blog Smart’s: <link href=”http://www.beblogsmart.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/favicon.ico” rel=”shortcut icon” type=”image/x-icon” />)–which you need to copy and paste into Notepad to access in just a bit.
3) Next, upload the file into your media library and then also copy and paste the file url (it should look similar to my favicon’s url of: http://www.beblogsmart.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/favicon.ico) into Notepad.
4) Now for the code editing: Access your Header.php file by going to Appearance–>Editor–>header.php. Before you do anything–copy and paste that entire file into a Notepad document as a precaution. Then look for your <HEAD> or <!–BEGIN head–> tag near the beginning of the file. You’re going to be copying that bit of html code for Faviconer again (step 2)–then pasting it directly beneath your head tag and saving the file…look at the picture below for help.
Now, if you go to your site’s domain name, you should see it. If you need to see it being done, and not just read the how-to, watch this video from Faviconer.
