Embed shortlinks for easier sharing
Short url links are now available straight from your WordPress dashboard with the WP.me Shortlinks feature. Long hyperlinks to your blog’s pages and posts can be cumbersome, especially when emailing someone, or posting a link to your article on Facebook or Twitter. I used to go to goo.gl to shorten my links, but now I use Jetpack’s feature–which will do the same job for you, right on the “edit post” page.
About the wp.me shortlinks from Jetpack: “Instead of typing or copy-pasting long URLs, you can now get a short and simple link to your posts and pages. This uses the super compact wp.me domain name, and gives you a unique URL you can use that will be safe and reliable.”
Simply activate this feature in Jetpack’s dashboard, and then go to a past published post, or create a new post or page.
Once you’ve saved a draft or published an article, the “get shortlink” button will pop up directly to the right of your permalink, beneath your post’s title (see below). Clicking that button will cause the short url link to pop up, and already highlighted for you to copy and then paste wherever you so desire.
It’s definitely not as pretty as your longer link–and I could see it being a potential struggle in getting people to click on it in an email because of that–but in Twitter at the very least, it’s important to keep your links short.
Be sure to read up on using Jetpack’s many features by checking out the comprehensive overview of the WordPress Jetpack plugin and a summary of ALL of the available features.
