Show similar content beneath blog posts
The goal of any website is first to gain an audience by providing great content and a quality message that your visitors want to read. But the second goal is to keep them on your site for a substantial amount of time. Of course, writing and giving good content to your visitors helps the most with this, but it’s worth it to help them along by showing them what else they might be interested in.
Along with the update to Jetpack 2.9.1., came a few new features to WordPress’ plugin. One of the latest available add-ons allows you to display related content within your site to readers. The Related Posts feature shows the links to your similar posts and pages beneath each post.
In the Jetpack.me summary, the related content will be automatically pulled based on the posts’ content and tags and categories.
Find and activate Related Posts in Jetpack’s main menu, then click “Configure”. You will automatically be redirected to your WordPress blog’s Reading Settings. You only have two options to potentially check. By checking the first, your site will “show a ‘Related’ header to more clearly separate the related section from posts,” while the second choice will give you a “large and visually striking layout.” A preview section makes it easy to see the changes firsthand.
The thumbnail photos pulled for the “large and visually striking layout” will be whatever photo you’ve set as each post’s featured image (or first photo if there isn’t a featured image).
I previously blogged about a plugin that will do the same thing as Jetpack’s Related Posts: the NRelate plugin. If you’ve used this plugin but have switched to Jetpack’s Related Posts option, please let me know your feedback. Which one is better?
Be sure to read up on using Jetpack’s many features by checking out the comprehensive overview of the WordPress Jetpack plugin and a summary of ALL of the available features.
