Automatic post loading
As an option in Jetpack, you can now activate infinite scrolling of blog posts on your WordPress blog. This feature automatically loads the next set of posts once a reader gets to the bottom of the blog page–rather than having the typical option to click a link and waiting for your site to refresh to get to more, older posts.
Once you install this feature, scrolling to the bottom loads another batch of past posts, seven at a time.
As this feature requires theme information and support to work, WordPress’ default themes (Twenty Ten, Twenty Eleven, and Twenty Twelve) are fully capable of having this option incorporated. Automattic themes from WordPress.org can also support automatic scrolling.
Activating this tool will redirect you to the options, within the reading section of your settings. Here you again can activate or deactivate the automatic scrolling, as well as have Google Analytics track each new batch of post loads as a page view by a reader. No infinite scrolling code is needed. Save your changes!
If you have content at the bottom of your site (such as contact information or widgets), I believe that the scrolling feature would automatically switch back to click mode–where visitors have to click to load the next set of posts on demand. Of course, this insures that your footer content is still accessible–which is good, since otherwise your visitors will only see the information at the bottom once they’ve scrolled through ALL of your past posts. But then you still don’t have infinite and automatic scrolling.
Also, WordPress Infinite Scroll requires that the theme you install it on supports this particular feature. I’ve found that with many of my clients’ blogs and my site, this feature isn’t available with the themes I have installed because of compatibility issues. But if you do have a theme that will allow you to utilize this feature, try it out. You can always deactivate it!
