Blogs hosted through WordPress.com’s system have many built-in features; such as: stats, social sharing, and embeddable contact forms.
But that doesn’t mean that WordPress.org sites have to suffer. Many of the free site’s features are available on self-hosted blogs with the Jetpack feature–which I highly recommend you connect and activate.
Jetpack is now automatically available through your blog’s dashboard–just look for the “Jetpack” tab on the left. If it’s not there, simply add Jetpack as a plugin. As you can see, there are a lot of features that you can access once you have Jetpack connected. And above shows just the first two rows–there’s many more when you scroll down, and WordPress seems to continually be adding more. Most of the features are free, but a couple do cost. Once connected to your blog, Jetpack has the ability to add features such as: shortcode embeds, spell check, email subscription, and the ability to view your site with mobile devices–among many more.
I don’t use all of them; you will have to check back here every Tuesday to see which features I personally would use in a blog and how to incorporate them–and make your own decision about which aspects to activate. Next Tuesday, I’ll cover the first step in getting started with Jetpack on your WordPress.org, self-hosted site!
Be sure to read up on using Jetpack’s many features by checking out the comprehensive overview of the WordPress Jetpack plugin and a summary of ALL of the available features.
