Unless you’d like your blog to have a single page with blog posts, you’ll want to add some more pages to your WordPress site. The page of blog posts will already be automatically set up for you, but should you want to add any other pages, such as: an “About Me” (if you’d like more than just an About Me widget on the sidebar), contact page or more — then you will need to create a blog page.
How to create a blog page
Adding a blog page follows roughly the same format as creating a blog post. To create a blog page, log into your WordPress site’s dashboard and click on the “add new” option below the “pages” tab on the left.
Just like with a blog post, pages have a title and body text, publishing options, and you can upload and insert any type of media — but unlike with blog posts, you won’t have the option to assign a category or tags to the page.
In the Page Attributes section, you have a few options. You can either leave everything as it is to have it display with the default template and attributes, or you can try out some of the available customizations:
- Parent – you can nest pages under “parent” pages for hierarchies within your menu. Or you can create a custom menu with a plugin, and be able to have more than just your pages in your menu — see my *notes below on creating a custom menu.
- Template – The availability and type of custom templates depends entirely on the theme you have installed. Click on the drop down menu to see if/what options you have.
- Order – By default, WordPress orders your pages on the front side of your site alphabetically (other than the blog page, which as the main page, will automatically come first in the menu). You can type in a number in this area to choose your own order. Or, you can create a custom menu for further options here to.
*You can edit and create a custom menu for the front side of your blog as well. A custom menu allows you to rearrange the order of your blog pages, add a page multiple times, create drop-down menus, and add links to other content (such as to your social media pages).
