Building a website on your own? While it sounds intimidating, be encouraged — it is doable! With a few basic steps and suggestions, you’ll be on your way creating your own site.
Find what you like
Pay attention to what you appreciate on other websites. Of course, you’ll want an attractive and user-friendly site. Find what works and what doesn’t, so that you can incorporate that into your own site.
Learn some code
While you can get away with not knowing a coding language (especially with blogging within the WordPress.com system), it certainly will help you in the long run. With just a rudimentary knowledge, you can make your website your own (whether it’s run on the more self-sufficient WordPress.org platform or you’re self-building a site).
Online services like Codecademy can be a great starting point, and there are plenty of boot camps and university courses you can try if you’re really interested.
Use a site-building platform
There are so many services out there for building your website or blog! Obviously, I’m a fan of WordPress, but take your pick from the abounding variety of options: Blogger, WordPress (.com or .org version), Weebly, and Wix, just to name a few. Many of the domain providers out there provide web hosting for the various website-building platforms; Rebel.com makes it easy to quickly and inexpensively get started with several of these platforms, if you have a domain with them.
Plan it out and set it up
It’s time to roll up your sleeves — nothing helps more to help you become familiar with your website, than to immerse yourself in setting up your site. Consider your top desires for the look and use of your site, as well as even the smaller things like typography and footers.
If you’re using a site-building platform, look for a theme that’s similar in design and functionality to your vision, then build off from there. If you’re trying your hand at building it mainly on your own, try sketching it out in Photoshop or with graphing paper first.
Seek out help
With our resource-rich culture, there’s no end to the amount of help available online and through community. If you have friends with their own businesses, chances are they’ve dabbled with creating a professional site, and they might have some tips and tricks for you. And there’s always sites and blogs out there with the goal of providing some helpful guidance in these areas. Also, hosting providers like Rebel.com have support teams with plenty of knowledge and insight.
Don’t give up
This website-building stuff is hard work, but with perseverance you can build your site yourself!
